The State Minister for Diaspora attends a special audience for Albanians held by Pope Francis

Today, the State Minister for Diaspora, Mr. Pandeli Majko was part of a special audience by Pope Francis during the commemoration of the 550th anniversary of the death of our national hero Skanderbeg.

In his prepared remarks to Albanians, Pope Francis took the opportunity to greet all Albanians and stated: “Today, we remember and celebrate Skanderbeg, an heroic son of a strong and generous people, who defended spiritual values and the Christian name with courage.” Skanderbeg, he continued, “forged the Albanian cultural identity with his deeds, becoming an undisputed symbol of cohesion and national unity.”

This is the second time that the Vatican holds a special audience for Albanians and our national hero. A similar audience took place in 1968 for the Albanian diaspora in Italy on the 500th anniversary of Skanderbeg’s death.

There were about 200 Albanians present at the event, including politicians, representatives of various religious communities and Albanian artists.

After the meeting with the Pope, successful Albanian artists such as Inva Mula, Dua Lipa, Ramë Lahaj, Erza Muqolli, Genc Tukici, Eno Peci, Lorik Cana, Olen Cezari, Elhaida Dani and Ermal Meta performed at the concert “United in memory of Skanderbeg”.
