The State Minister for Diaspora Mr. Pandeli Majko attended the second meeting of the “Friends of Children” parliamentary group, organized by the Speaker of the Albanian Parliament, Mr. Gramoz Ruci. The amendments to Law no. 10129, dated 11.05.2009 “On the civil status” was the main focus of the meeting. “Friends of Children” is a multiparty parliamentary group that closely cooperates with state institutions and civil society to address several child issues and protect their interests.

At the meeting, participants discussed the issues of registration of undocumented children. The registration of the children born out of the country that have two names or children with two surnames or abandoned children at birth were the main focus of the problem.

The Speaker of the Albanian Parliament, Mr. Gramoz Ruci stated: “By thanking the experts for the work they have done so far, I am inviting everyone to give their opinion on the project that they have submitted, so we can send the project to the Commissions and at the plenary session for approval.”  The draft law has to do with the registration of children born abroad, which will be provided in the civil registry of the destination country and, when this is not possible, in the Albanian diplomatic or consular representations abroad. Legal changes are important in Albania’s integration in the EU and in guaranteeing human rights.
